“I do not remember the year 1900 because I was too young, and I shall not see the dawn of a new century unless I live to be well over a hundred, which is extremely improbable.
I have no doubt that while I lay fast asleep on New Year’s Eve in the year 1899 my parents, and all other grown-ups, gathered in the gaslight of those days to bid farewell to the Eighteen Hundreds and to welcome the Nineteens with that mixture of fear and faith which is Man’s historic and merciful attitude to the future. It must have seem to them that the solid old world had somehow turned a corner and that the new era was one of strange and exciting possibilities.
How right they were.” ~ H. V. Morton
